" Cities around the planet are in crisis. The rapid growth of cities
and the increasing expansion of suburbia have produced polluted
urban environments whose inhabitants are increasingly alienated
from each other. As a possible solution to these problems, architect
Paolo Soleri proposes that we must begin to build an entirely new
type of city - the Arcology , which merges ecological principles
into its architecture. Soleri believes that all cities are living
organisms, and that in order to be sustainable, cities must be
designed in accordance with nature. This intriguing portrait of
Soleri explores the possible impact of the architect's revolutionary
ideas. Soleri, a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright, has designed
and is attempting to build a prototype city of the future that
goes beyond even the wildest imaginings of Wright. Will Soleri's
cities be the future habitats for humanity, or will they remain
as the blueprints of a visionary 20th-century designer?"
