What should
I bring?
A good rule of thumb is to bring what you would need to be comfortable
on a camping trip (i.e. a flashlight and sleeping bag). Sunscreen
is a must and insect repellent recommended. You will also need work
clothes (i.e. work boots and gloves). A further description of what
to bring will be sent to you by the Workshop Coordinator once you
have been accepted to the program.
Is there Internet access for workshoppers?
Yes, there is high speed internet access (T-1) and e-mail available.
However, access time is shared among several people and limited to
30 minutes per session. You can also bring your own laptop and connect
to the network for a $20.00 fee, good for the duration of the workshop.
Please contact the Network Admin if you are interested in this option.
How much agricultural work is done on the
Workshop?
We have a small, but thriving organic agricultural program. The Arcosanti
Organics Manager and crew manage a peach orchard
of 80 trees, several plots of herbs and vegetables as well as two
experimental greenhouses. The yields of the garden supplement our
meals in the Cafe, are sold at local farmer's markets, and are sometimes
packaged for sale under our Arcosanti Organics label. In May, 2001
the Garden Crew planted 100 rows of blue and white varieties of Pueblo
Corn in the traditional Hopi way. Periodically, workshoppers may assist
in the care and harvest of this and other crops.
| Do
you generate your own energy there? |
|
Yes, but only on a very small scale. We do have a few solar panels,
and Community Council funds initiated the purchase of a solar water
pump. A donated wind generator powers part of the Lab Building.
At this point, we draw most of our power from the grid. However,
the buildings at Arcosanti do incorporate passive solar design,
greatly reducing our energy needs. The apse effect is one example
of this design. Also, our main material for construction of our
major structures is concrete which absorbs heat during the day,
keeping the space cool and then radiates that heat out at night
when the temperature drops.
What kind of people live at Arcosanti?
The population at Arcosanti is very diverse. Some are architects
or interior designers, about 30% are bronze or ceramic artisans,
and the remainder generally have some sort of liberal arts education.
People are drawn to Arcosanti for various reasons, but primarily
because they are interested in ecology or architecture. Most residents
are in their twenties or thirties. However, every decade up to 80
has at least one representative.
Is Arcosanti a commune or intentional
community?
No. Arcosanti does not fit either definition. It is a construction
site. Over the years a community has naturally developed as a result
of 33 years of people living and working together to build the prototype
arcology. However, the Arcosanti Project is administered by the
nonprofit Cosanti Foundation and does not fit an intentional community
model.
Is employment available after the workshop?
Yes, in most cases. We are always looking for good people to help
with the project, and may have either volunteer or paid staff positions
available after a workshop in one of several departments. Please
inquire about staying on/becoming a resident. We also have a three-month
non-paid internship program.
Can I pursue my own work while living at Arcosanti?
Yes. Many people at Arcosanti have professions independent of the
project, such as sculpting, jewelry making, writing, mycology and
web design, to name a few. But everyone living on site must contribute
40 hours per week to the building, maintenance, or administration
of Arcosanti.
May I bring a dog with me?
Dogs are not allowed during the Workshop for any circumstance except service animals for persons with disabilities. Temporary overnight guests staying in the guestrooms may bring a pet for an additional fee, depending on availability of designated rooms for guests with pets. Again, Workshop participants may not bring a dog on site.
Please let us know if there are additional questions you would like to ask about our program.
